4 Predisposing factors for alopecia

Alopecia or baldness means partial or complete hair loss from areas of the scalp. It's irrelevant to general health status of the body, it's very common in men; but it could affect women too in a limited ratio.

Most cases of alopecia have a genetic origin, but the actual cause still vague and unclear. Anyway, recent medical studies showed that the gene responsible for alopecia is usually stimulated by male androgen hormone, which explain the reason of spread of alopecia in men compared to women.

On the same context, there are some predisposing factors which increase the incidence of alopecia; they include:

  1. Malnutrition and lack of well-balanced diet.
  2.
  3. Medical conditions that affect the hair of scalp and cause hair loss such as alopecia areata.
  4. Administration of medications that cause hair loss such as chemotherapy.

Management of alopecia includes hair transplant; which involves extraction/harvesting of hair follicles from healthy areas in the scalp and implanting it in the affected areas. On the other hand, certain medications (such as minoxidil & vitamin A) can be used for stimulation of growth of hair follicles; also well-balanced diet, rest and avoiding smoking are very important measures.
