Back pain and its association with breastfeeding

Breastfeeding certainly has many benefits for the health of the mother and child as well as its role in building a strong bond between them, but the uncomfortable positions that the mother takes during breastfeeding may cause her to feel pain in the neck and back, especially because it happens every few hours so the baby gets the nutrition he or she needs.

How can breastfeeding cause neck and back pain?

1- Weight gain due to pregnancy and childbirth:

The more weight the woman weighs during pregnancy, the greater the pressure on her back. And that continues with her after giving birth and during breastfeeding, leading the woman to feel back and neck pain.

2-  Lifting and carrying the baby the wrong way:

Of course, lifting or carrying things the wrong way causes a person to feel back pain, and that happens when a mother carries her baby for long hours, especially during breastfeeding, and that makes her feel back pain.

3- Lack of sleep:

It is known that lack of sleep and not getting enough rest leads to putting the body under pressure, including back muscles. And that is what happens to the mother after giving birth and during breastfeeding. And when she does not sleep for enough hours and remains awake to provide her baby with what she or he needs, That puts her body under great pressure causing back and muscles pain.

4- Pain that remains after childbirth:

During pregnancy and before giving birth, the woman's body begins to prepare for delivering the baby by releasing the relaxin hormone, which relaxes the ligaments and muscles in the pelvic area, causing some pain to the mother, and that pain may continue even after delivering the baby and may worsen due to breastfeeding uncomfortable positions.

How to reduce back pain resulting from breastfeeding?

  1. Choosing a seat that supports the back and neck will help the mother sit properly during breastfeeding, and avoid the wrong positions causing back pain.
  2. Changing the position of sitting or lying down from time to time during breastfeeding will help avoid getting uncomfortable for a long time and back pain.
  3. Using the breastfeeding support pillow helps the mother take more comfortable positions during breastfeeding.
  4. Doing Elongation Stretches for the back muscles, will reduce the severity of the pain felt by the mother due to breastfeeding.
  5. Getting a back massage can reduce back pain due to breastfeeding and make the mother more comfortable.
  6. Getting enough sleep and drinking the daily requirement of water will help avoid muscle spasms and pain.
