A Puzzling Case of Suffocation

 

A two-month-old girl was suffering from repeated episodes of apnea, which made her parents go to multiple hospitals in order to get her examined and admitted, and she was diagnosed with Bronchitis. However, the episodes of apnea reoccurred, and the confusion between doctors and parents continued, which led to her going to the emergency Room of the Saudi German Hospital, Makkah branch.

 

 

The child was received in the emergency of the Makkah branch, and after evaluating the case, it was decided to admit her to pediatric intensive care.

After performing the necessary tests, including CT scans, the medical staff had an accurate diagnosis, which was that the infant suffered from Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which caused the episodes of suffocation and apnea, and accordingly, appropriate treatment was prescribed, in addition to prescribing a specific type of milk suitable for infants with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

 

The infant's condition improved significantly with the absence of episodes of suffocation and she was discharged from the hospital and continued to be followed up periodically in outpatient visits.
