Removal of life-threatening tumor at Makkah Branch

A 59-year-old woman came for examination at the gynecology clinic at the Saudi German Hospital, Makkah branch, where she was suffering from excruciating pain, coinciding with the appearance of a large tumor in the abdomen the size of a uterus at the end of the ninth month of pregnancy, which led to difficulty breathing and movement, and the impossibility of lying on the back.

With a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, and a previous stroke.

The ultrasound examination revealed the presence of a huge multi-chamber cyst that fills the entire abdominal cavity, pressing on the liver, kidneys, stomach, intestines, diaphragm, and lungs. An MRI scan was not performed because it was impossible for the patient to lie down on her back. The tests also showed a high percentage of tumor markers in the blood, which increases the likelihood that the tumor is malignant.

The decision was made to perform exploratory surgery in the abdomen, to remove the tumor from the uterus and other ovaries and take samples for histological analysis after controlling the blood sugar level and high blood pressure.

The surgery was performed by Prof. Dr. Anas Mohamed Jamal, Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynecological Surgery, and his surgical team, where the tumor was removed from the uterus and the left ovary through a longitudinal incision of the abdomen below the navel area, followed by suction of about two liters of mucus that fills the tumor to facilitate its exit from the wound, without the need to incision the abdomen completely longitudinally. The cancer was then separated from the appendix, cecum, end of the small intestine, right ureter, abdominal parietal, and pelvis, and enlarged lymph nodes located between the common iliac artery and vein, and the omentum under the transverse colon were also removed. This was followed by an appendectomy by Dr. Khaled Al-Zahrani, consultant surgeon at the hospital.

The surgery took about four hours and was crowned with success, thanks to God. The patient went out to her room, and then to her home intact and healthy to complete the journey of recovery between her family and loved ones after a difficult surgery, in which the team of anesthesiologists, gynecologists, and surgeons who made the time & effort to end the patient's suffering and put her foot on the path of a smooth recovery journey, with the grace of God, because we are fully committed to caring for you as our families.
