A baby with a rare congenital malformation called *gastroschisis was referred to the Saudi German Hospital Dammam.

*Gastroschisis is a birth defect of the abdominal wall where the baby's intestines are found outside of the baby's body.

The head of NICU, Dr. Zakaria Al-Salam said this was a very rare case that required highly specialized medical staff including a pediatric surgeon, anesthesiologist, nursing staff, nutritionist, and intensive care specialist.

The baby needed special care post-surgery including a feeding tube and ventilator. After a successful surgery and two months of monitored treatment, the baby went home in good health.
