3 common causes of vaginal pain

Doctors believe that vaginal pain could originate from the actual vagina or from the labia or vulva; it also may arise from the pelvic region. So, we will discuss the most common causes of vaginal pain.

  1. Infection: vaginal infections cause itching and painful swelling of the vagina, this pain is exacerbated during urination or intercourse. Anti-fungal & anti-bacterial drugs are helpful in the management of these infections.
  2. Bartholin's cyst: Bartholin's gland lies in the vagina and is responsible for vaginal lubrication. Bartholin's cyst develops due to blockage of the gland, this cyst becomes painful and filled with pus. It's felt as a tender lump near the vaginal opening and is usually accompanied by continuous vaginal pain. The proper management of this cyst includes surgical drainage with good antibiotic cover.
  3. Endometriosis: it means the presence of tissues of the lining layer of the uterus in areas outside the uterus (mainly in the pelvis). This condition is manifested mainly with severe vaginal pain during intercourse as well as during menses. This pain is usually accompanied by other symptoms such as painful urination and abnormal bowel movement. Management of this case includes hormonal therapy; surgical intervention may be needed in resistant cases.
