5 Causes for teeth erosion
Teeth erosion means disappearance of the outer enamel layer which leads to dental hypersensitivity and increased the incidence of tooth decay.
Teeth erosion develops due to many reasons such as:
- Genetic cause; some people may have genetic defect in the composition of their teeth, which leads to weakness of the outer enamel layer and teeth erosion.
- Frequent eating of solid foods as dry bread or nuts (hazelnuts).
- Overconsumption of soft drinks or acidic foods such as lemon.
- Teeth erosion is very common in people suffering from stomach upset associated with recurrent nausea and vomiting. When stomach acids and enzymes reach the mouth, it causes dental erosion. Teeth erosion is common also during pregnancy for the same reason (morning sickness and recurrent vomiting).
- Brushing your teeth using a brush with rough surface causes gradual teeth erosion.
For prevention of teeth erosion, it's advised to apply the following instructions and precautions:
- Follow a healthy diet rich in calcium and phosphorus, avoid soft drinks and limit acidic foods.
- Avoid frequent vomiting as well as immediate treatment of any medical disorder related to GIT.
- Using the proper teeth brush (with soft surface to avoid inducing any teeth damage).
- Refrain from using teeth whitening products as it cause teeth erosion.
