5 Health tips to control GERD symptoms

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when undigested food mixed with stomach digestive acids return back to the esophagus due to esophageal valve dysfunction (the valve between esophagus and stomach). GERD symptoms include; heartburn, continuous cough, sore throat, and stomach pain. To control GERD symptoms you should do the following tips:

  1. Avoid foods that worsen GERD symptoms, which include; acidic food (such as tomatoes and citrus foods), spicy foods, greasy meals, and coffee.
  2. Avoid overeating: eating large meals may cause abdominal distension which worsens GERD symptoms.
  3. Avoid smoking: Smoking reduces saliva secretion, increases secretion of gastric acids, and irritates the esophagus. All these factors worsen GERD symptoms.
  4. Avoid sleeping after meals: when you sleep just after eating, the stomach digestive acids will return back to the esophagus easily. So you should wait at least 2 hours after meals, and use extra pillows to avoid acid regurgitation.
  5. Avoid obesity: obesity leads to increased pressure on the stomach in addition to some hormonal changes, these factors worsen GERD symptoms. So you should keep your body weight within normal healthy limits.
