5 tips to maintain vocal health


We use our voice all the time when communicating and talking to people. The strain on our voice and vocal cords can result in conditions such as laryngitis or inflammation of the vocal cords. Here are some tips to help maintain vocal health:

  • Pay attention to changes in your voice: hoarseness can be a sign of something as simple as an allergy or common cold. However, if it persists for longer than 2 weeks, particularly if the patient is not a smoker or has no flu-like symptoms, it's important to consult a doctor, as it could be a sign of a serious health condition such as vocal cord paralysis or laryngeal cancer.
  • Quit smoking: tobacco, nicotine, heat and other harmful chemicals cause inflammation, swelling, and even cancer in the mouth, nose, throat, and lungs. These complications affect vocal and overall health.
  • Speak softly: avoid shouting or speaking loudly, as this puts unnecessary strain on the vocal cords and can damage the voice.
  • Treat reflux: gastro-esophageal reflux disease causes gastric acids to rise from the stomach to the throat and can damage the vocal folds. Symptoms include heartburn, bad taste in the mouth, frequent bloating or burping, and frequent hoarseness. Consult a specialist for treatment.
  • Drink plenty of water: to lubricate the vocal cords.
