5 Tips for management of coccydynia

The lower segment of the spine is called coccyx; it consists of incomplete vertebrae connected to each other and lies near the rectum.

Coccyx is a part of the base that person lies upon in the sitting position, so it's free of any neurological cells, which increases the incidence of injuries, especially in cases of exposure to direct trauma, leading to coccyx pain which is known as coccydynia.

Coccydynia is classified as severe pain in the area of coccyx, which exacerbates in cases of sitting or lying on the back for long duration.

The pattern of pain related to coccydynia isn't enough for diagnosis; diagnostic imaging (such as X-ray or CT scan) on the whole pelvic area should be done for confirmation the diagnosis.

Management strategy (therapeutic and preventive) consists of the following tips:

  1. It's strictly forbidden to sit or lie on hard surfaces; also it's forbidden to sit for long duration.
  2. It's advised to use medical pillows and mattress which are manufactured to reduce the pressure on coccyx.
  3. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen or paracetamol) will be helpful to relieve coccydynia.
  4. Physiotherapy and hot baths are also effective choices that can help in pain relief.
  5. If all measures failed, surgical removal of the inflamed coccyx will be the only available choice.
