6 Causes of hair loss

The daily hair falling is a natural physiological phenomenon that happens to all people, medical studies say that adults lose about 150 hairs per day. If hair falling exceeded this daily average, it's called pathological hair falling or hair loss. This pathological phenomenon could be due to certain factors or medical issues, which we will highlight now.

  1. Temporary physiological hormonal disturbances in women: as in pregnancy and lactation; increased levels of certain hormones (such as estrogen, progesterone and prolactin) lead to weakness of hair follicles, which predisposes to hair loss.
  2. Malnutrition and anemia: these medical issues are usually manifested with hair loss due to the lack of hair content of keratin as well as zinc and iron.
  3. High grade fever over 39º C: hair loss in this case is usually temporary and ends when fever fades.
  4. Thyroid gland dysfunction: hair loss could be due to hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Management of hair loss in these cases depends mainly on treatment of the hormonal dysfunction.
  5. Medications: side effects of certain drugs (oral contraceptive pills, chemotherapy, anticoagulants, antidepressants and some hypertensive drugs) may include hair loss. In these cases medical consultation will be helpful for adjustment of the drug dose or changing it completely.
  6. Alopecia areata: it's manifested with multiple scattered circular whitish hairless spots in the scalp.
