6 Causes for neck pain

Neck pain is a common health problem, which has a direct effect on general condition of the body. Causes of neck pain include the following:

  1. Uncomfortable positions during sitting or sleeping as well as sudden movement of the neck.
  2. Inflammation of the cervical spine or the muscles of the neck, which is very common in patients of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis.
  3. Disc prolapse associated with herniation of the intervertebral disc located between the cervical spine, leading to painful friction between the vertebrae and inflammation of the nerve endings in the neck, which finally leads to recurrent neck pain.
  4. Peripheral neuritis or narrowing of the upper part of the spinal canal through which the spinal cord passes.
  5. Direct trauma to the neck as in accidents or violent sports (boxing).
  6. Hyperthyroidism associated with thyroid gland hyperplasia.

In chronic and advanced cases of neck pain, the pain extends to shoulders and upper extremities; it could be associated with other symptoms such as numbness and feeling dizzy.

Management of neck pain usually includes anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs as well as muscle relaxant and Vitamin B12 preparations for nerve affection. Also physiotherapy and hot baths will be helpful.
