6 Tips for elderly to avoid COVID-19

Medical studies showed that most cases COVID-19 are mild cases, but elderly people especially with preexisting chronic or debilitating conditions (such as diabetes, renal failure, lung disease and immunocompromised patients) are at higher risk and mostly affected with severe symptoms; which explains the cause of increased mortality rates from COVID-19 in elderly compared to young age. So we will highlight some important tips that elderly people should follow to reduce the risk of COVID-19.

  1. Home self-quarantine is the most important step that should be done to minimize the possibility of exposure to infection. This step is effective also in controlling COVID-19 outbreak, as no personal contact with the others means no further cases of COVID-19.
  2. The functional capacity of the immune system should be enhanced. This is done by following well-balanced healthy diet (consists mainly of proteins, vegetables and fruits) as well as having enough hours of good sleep.
  3. Frequently touched surfaces (cell phone, computers, tables, door handles… etc.) should be cleaned and disinfected frequently.
  4. Touching eyes, nose and mouth with hands should be avoided.
  5. No need to wear a surgical face mask in home self-quarantine, as it won't protect against COVID-19. Also it may increase the risk to infection if it's worn or used improperly. Wearing face mask is required only in cases suspected or diagnosed with COVID-19 to prevent spread of infection.
  6. Keep updated on COVID-19 news from professional and trusted medical sources.
