8 Nutritional tips for management of diarrhea

Diarrhea is very common health issue associated with dehydration and electrolyte disturbance, so untreated diarrhea or chronic diarrhea tends to be life threatening condition and needs urgent therapeutic intervention.

  1. You should drink plenty of water and fluids, to correct fluid loss and to avoid dehydration.
  2. Preferable foods in diarrhea include; peeled apple, boiled banana, boiled or grilled potatoes, boiled carrots & rice soup.
  3. Full fat milk and dairy products should be replaced with skimmed milk and dairy products.
  4. It's recommended to eat low-fat food; stay away from fatty and greasy food. Grilled or boiled foods are always the best choices.
  5. Yogurt is rich in probiotics (the useful bacteria) which are very effective in combating diarrhea-causing bacteria.
  6. White bread is preferred more than brown bread in cases of diarrhea.
  7. Slight increase of salt in your food is recommended to compensate electrolyte loss caused by diarrheal episodes.
  8. It's recommended to stay away from the following foods:
  • High-sugar foods.
  • Raw or boiled vegetables except carrots.
  • Spicy food.
  • Tea and coffee.
