Allergic rhinitis; causes & management

Allergic rhinitis is very common nasal issue that could occur throughout the year, especially in spring and autumn. It develops due to exposure of the nasal mucosa to an allergen such as:

  • Dust: it's the most common allergen. It's noted that allergy associated with exposure to dust tends to be permanent throughout the year.
  • Pollen: the associated allergy usually appears in spring and autumn only.
  • Pets: such as cats and dogs.
  • Food: such as chocolate and coconut.
  • Medications: such as Aspirin, Sulfa and certain antibiotics.
  • Other allergens: such as sunlight and wool.

When the patient is exposed to the allergen, the immune system stimulates the body to secrete histamine, which causes some clinical manifestations such as; erythema, itching, runny nose and eye redness.

Management of allergic rhinitis includes:

  • Detecting the allergen by doing series of allergy tests, then avoiding it as possible.
  • Regular cleaning of the nose by saline solution.
  • Using topical antihistaminic nasal spray, also antihistaminic oral drugs can be used.
  • In resistant or advanced cases of allergic rhinitis, corticosteroids can be used after exclusion of elevation of blood pressure or blood glucose level.
  • If all above measure failed, the patient could undergo surgical removal of the nerve responsible for allergic rhinitis.
