Many people agree that Cortisone is a harmful drug as its administration involves many serious complications and side effects. In fact; it's a common misconception; the serious complications and harmful side effects develop only in cases of misuse and overdose of the drug. Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drug, which effectively inhibits inflammatory reactions caused by the immune system. So Cortisone is widely used in management of many medical conditions, especially those of immunological origin such as; psoriasis, ulcerative colitis, rheumatic arthritis, systemic lupus… etc.
In spite of the widespread use of Cortisone in the medical field, it could be responsible for many negative health issues, such as:
- Diabetes mellitus.
- Osteoporosis and decreased bone density due to lack of calcium in bones.
- Recurrent fungal and microbial infections due to immunosuppression.
- Related skin problems such as; dry skin, erythema, dermatitis or pimples.
- Regional obesity which means deposition of fat in certain areas in the body, especially in abdomen and shoulders.
- Deterioration of vision, which is usually associated with glaucoma or cataract.
To avoid all of the above, the following precautions should be followed:
- Your doctor should be aware of any other medications you take, so as to avoid any negative drug interactions.
- Stopping administration of Cortisone should be in a gradual course, by reducing the daily dose gradually (within 1 month at least) and under your doctor supervision.
- Daily intake of vitamin D & Calcium supplementations is recommended as a preventive measure to avoid osteoporosis.
- Regular monitoring of blood pressure and blood glucose level is recommended as well as salt and sugar restriction.
