Can our food choices affect our sleep?

Sleep disorders is a serious problem for a wide range of people, prompting scientists to conduct more researches and studies to find the link between sleep and different types of foods as well as identifying which foods help to sleep and which foods could cause sleep disorders.

Studies showed that fat-rich foods are the most common foods that induce insomnia and sleep disorders. So we can say; the more fats we eat, the less sleep we have.

Many people think that stomach fullness with fatty foods (especially fatty foods rich in carbohydrates) causes laziness and desire to sleep. This could be true from the theoretical aspect, but actually the type of sleep induced by fatty foods is usually disturbed and intermittent sleep; so the sleeper usually wakes up exhausted, tired and feel as if he didn't sleep at all.

Also, it's advised to avoid caffeine and spicy foods in late night as it stimulate brain cells to increase the secretion of melatonin hormone, which in turn make our bodies alert and unable to sleep.

On the other hand, if you want to have a comfortable sleep; a glass of warm milk is very good choice as milk contains "amino butyric acid" which has the sedative properties of "benzodiazepine" and helps in body relaxation and comfortable sleep.
