 Runny nose is one of the most common complaints in cold weather, but it could develop in hot weather too due to many other physiological and pathological causes.

First; physiological causes of runny nose include:

  1. Anxiety and emotional stress.
  2. Foreign body in the nose, which is very common in young children.
  3. Nasal irritation due to exposure to fume or dust.
  4. Excessive crying.
  5. Spicy food.

Second; pathological causes of runny nose include:

  1. Anxiety and emotional stress.

  3. Nasal irritation due to exposure to fume or dust.
  4. Nasal polyp.
  5. Allergic rhinitis.

Management of runny nose is so simple; it consists of the following:

  • Treatment of the cause (sinusitis, rhinitis, polyp… etc.).
  • Proper cleaning of nasal cavity by saline.
  • Drinking plenty of water to compensate fluid loss.
  • Medications include nasal decongestants and antihistaminic drugs.
  • If runny nose associated with fever, it indicates secondary bacterial infection. Antibiotic and antipyretic drugs are added to the regimen.
