Management of Tinea Pedis

Management of Tinea Pedis

Tinea pedis or athlete's foot develops between the toes due to exposure of these regions to moisture and wetness for long duration, which represents a good chance for fungi (Tinea Pedis) to survive and induce the following clinical signs:

  • Feeling itching and tingling of the feet; especially in the areas between the toes.
  • Burning sensation and redness in the soles.
  • Appearance of pimples and blisters in the foot, which exacerbates the itching and scratching.
  • Dryness of the skin covering the heels, especially in winter months.
  • Appearance of skin crusts in the areas between the toes.
  • The nails become brittle, fragile and yellow in color.

The above clinical signs are unreliable to confirm the diagnosis, as these signs could be manifested in many other skin lesions such as; skin allergy, dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis. For diagnosis confirmation, a sample of skin crusts is collected from the area in between the toes and sent for lab examination; microscopic inspection of the fungi is diagnostic.

Management of Tinea Pedis includes oral systemic antifungal drugs as well as antifungal topical preparations. On the other hand, the following instructions should be followed:

  • Pay attention to foot hygiene and their dryness; your foot should be always dry and clean.
  • Your socks should be made of cotton, and you should change them regularly.
  • Avoid tight and closed shoes; your shoes should be wide, loose and well-ventilated.
