Signs & management of chickenpox

Chickenpox is a highly viral contagious disease characterized by skin rash in the form of small itchy blisters filled with fluid that initially presents in the trunk, and then extends to all areas of the body.

Chickenpox is very common in children, elderly as well as immunocompromised patients. It spreads through inhalation of cough or sneezing droplets of an infected patient, also direct contact with the blisters could be responsible for infection.

The clinical picture of chickenpox include the following:

  • Low-grade fever.

  • Anorexia.

  • Headache and generalized muscle ache
  • Malaise.
  • Finally, the blisters dry out leading to scabs formation.

On the other hand, Complications associated with chickenpox include: pneumonia, meningitis and bacterial dermatitis.

The clinical picture of chickenpox is diagnostic; but some doctors may order polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to confirm the diagnosis.

Management of chickenpox consists mainly of antiviral drugs (Acyclovir) as well as anti-inflammatory drugs (Paracetamol or Ibuprufen) and topical preparations (Calamine lotion) for the itchy blisters. Antibiotics may be added in cases of secondary bacterial infection.
