6 Tips to avoid harmful effects of sunlight
There is no doubt that sunlight is very essential for human being; also doctors recommend exposing children to sunlight in the early morning, as sunlight is the main source of vitamin D which keeps bones healthy and prevents them against rickets or osteomalacia.
Despite the great benefits of sunlight, excessive exposure to direct sunlight could lead to many harmful health effects; such as:
- Sunburns and skin hyper-pigmentation.
- Skin allergy and irritation.
- Sunstroke and its associated complications such as dehydration and heat exhaustion.
- Benign or malignant skin cancer (melanoma).
- Decreased functional capacity of the immune system.
- Skin wrinkles and aging marks.
- Increased the incidence of photosensitivity or cataract.
So, to get the benefits of sunlight as well as to avoid its harmful effects; it's recommended to do the following:
- Exposure to sunlight is allowed only in the early morning hours and for a short duration (20-40 minutes).
- If you had to be exposed to direct sunlight for long duration, it's recommended to wear wide hats and sunglasses. Also sunscreen will be helpful.
- Avoiding sunbaths or tanning sessions.
- Wearing loose cotton clothes with light colors (especially white and yellow colors).
- Drinking plenty of water, also fresh vegetables and fruits rich in dietary fibers are necessary.
- If you noticed any newly formed hyper-pigmented area in the skin, you should seek medical consultation.
