5 Causes of tinnitus

Tinnitus –contrary to what appears to be- tends to be a big deal as it interferes with patient's daily activities and negatively affects the quality of life; especially it's a continuous problem and may cause many psychological problems such as anxiety, stress and even depression.
Tinnitus may develop due to long-term exposure to very loud sounds (as in factories or construction sites). Also, it may develop due to the following causes:

  1. Medical problems, such as; Meniere's disease (abnormal pressure of fluid inside the inner ear), diabetes and hypertension.
  2.  Medications: medical studies showed that long-term use of high doses of certain medications (such as aspirin, chemotherapy, anti-depressants, certain antibiotics… etc.) may cause tinnitus.
  3. Ear wax: excessive accumulation of ear wax may interfere with normal mechanism of hearing and leads to tinnitus.
  4. Direct head trauma, as in car accidents or vigorous sports such as boxing or wrestling.
  5. Disorders related to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) as in stiffness of TMJ which causes mobility-associated noise and tinnitus.

There is no approved medical treatment for tinnitus, so it's mainly managed by removal of the cause and using of hearing aids (if it's still needed) which help in improving hearing by elimination of noise as much as possible.
