Management of breast cancer

Management of breast cancer

There are many therapeutic options that can be used in the management of breast cancer, they include:

  1. Surgery: it's commonly used, as it's safe and effective. The surgical details are determined by the surgeon according to the site, size, number, and staging of the tumor. For example; localized tumor excision is done in solitary small masses, while total mastectomy with lymphadenectomy is done in multiple large extended tumors.
  2. Radiotherapy: This therapeutic measure is based on using high-energy radiological beams to damage cancerous cells within the breast tissue. Radiotherapy can be used in localized or metastatic tumors; also it's usually used as an adjuvant complementary therapy to avoid recurrence.
  3. Chemotherapy: the mechanism of action is similar to radiotherapy; as they target cancerous cells and stop their growth, division, and spread. The only difference is that chemotherapy can be used preoperative to reduce tumor size, which increases the success rate of complete tumor resection.

As "prevention is better than cure" we recommend an annual mammogram after the age of 50 for women with a negative family history of breast cancer, and after the age of 45 years old for women who had a positive family history of the disease.
